Volt Home Pros, Solar Experts

Getting a New Roof, But have solar panels?
Here's How We Handle That.

Your roof needs work, but your solar panels are in the way-and they can't just be worked around. Volt safely removes your entire system so your roofer can do their job with a clear deck, then reinstalls and tests everything once the new roof is complete.

Can I even get a new roof if I have solar panels?

Close up shot of Solar Panel Array

Yes you can, but the solar panels need to be safely detached first.

Your solar panels are fastened straight into your roof deck, so a roofer can't just tear off shingles or replace decking underneath an active array without damaging the panels, the roof, or both.

The fix is what the solar industry calls a detach and reset. Your system comes off before roofing starts, gets stored safely on-site, and goes back on — fully tested — once the new roof is complete.

HOW IT WORKS

Solar Detach & Reset Steps

1

Intital Assessment and Inspection

We look at your roof, your solar system, and your timeline-either on-site or with photos you send us. We confirm panel count, mounting type, and any special access considerations. Also we look at what may need to be upgraded to stay within code compliance. Then we present a plan.
2

We Detach

Once you're happy, our certified crew safely disconnects and removes your panels and racking, labels every component, and stores everything securely on-site.
3

Roof Work

Your roofing contractor completes the replacement or repair with a clear deck, no obstructions, no working around anything. We stay in touch with them on timing so your panels go back on as soon as the roof is ready.
4

Professional Re-Installation / Upgrades

We reinstall your panels and system to current code standards, with new flashing and mounting hardware where needed to keep your new roof's warranty intact.
5

Recommission & Test

We reconnect the full system, run performance testing, and confirm your solar production is working before we call the job done.
We handle everything.

FAQs

Your Questions Answered

What does solar panel removal and reinstallation cost?
+

Pricing depends on system size (panel count), roof pitch and type, and access — most residential jobs fall in a broad range depending on these factors. We'll give you an exact number after a quick assessment; there's no cost to get a quote.

How long does it take?

Detach is typically completed in a single day for most residential systems. Reset happens after your roof work is finished and usually takes a comparable amount of time. We coordinate directly with the roofing timeline so there's no unnecessary downtime for your system.

Is solar panel removal covered by insurance?

If your roof replacement is tied to storm or hail damage, the detach-and-reset cost is often eligible to be included as part of your insurance claim. We'd recommend confirming this directly with your adjuster or roofing contractor as part of your claim scope, and we're glad to provide documentation of the work for your file.

Which areas do you do solar detach and reset services in?

Volt provides solar panel removal and reinstallation across Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Do I have to remove my solar panels for a roof replacement?

In almost all cases, yes. Panels are fastened directly into the roof deck, and a roofer can't safely tear off or replace roofing material underneath an active array. Removing panels first protects both your roof and your solar system.

Can my roofer remove and reinstall my solar panels?

No-this should be done by a certified solar contractor, not a general roofing crew. Solar panels carry live DC electricity anytime there's daylight, even with the inverter switched off, and improper handling can void your panel and inverter warranties or create serious safety hazards.

Will removing my panels void my solar warranty?

Not normally if it's done by a certified installer following manufacturer specifications. That's the main risk of letting an uncertified person handle it. Most manufacturers require licensed, certified technicians for any removal and reinstallation to keep the warranty intact.

Do you work with my existing roofer, or do you provide one?

Either way. If you already have a roofing contractor, we coordinate directly with them on timing so there's no gap between roof completion and your panels going back on. If you don't have one yet, we can point you toward contractors we've worked with before.
